Taking a leap of faith
One in four Australians dreams of a side hustle, but hasn’t put it into action. So what’s stopping them from pursuing their passions?
Half of them (52%) cite money as the biggest obstacle to putting their small business plan into action, but it’s not simply a lack of funds that’s holding them back. Other key issues include:
- Lack of confidence (41%)
- Uncertainty about their business idea (39%)
- Lack of expertise (37%)
- Lack of time (32%)
- Lack of tech skills (11%)
So it’s clear that budding small business owners don’t just need an injection of cash to get their idea off the ground. They also recognise that they need some sound advice to help them develop a solid plan for their business and put that plan into action.
Areas of greatest need
According to the GoDaddy survey, people say their greatest needs in terms of advice are regarding:
- Financial and tax (55%)
- Branding and marketing (45%)
- Website building and development (42%)
- eCommerce (29%)
- People management (28%)
They’re not mistaken, as people who have already made the leap to start their own small business agree that it’s a pretty good list.
When current and former small business owners were asked about the most important support they needed when deciding to go it alone, they ranked the issues in almost the exact same order as people who are still thinking about taking the leap:
- Financial and tax (69%)
- Branding and marketing (51%)
- Website building and development (49%)
- People management (37%)
- eCommerce (35%)
While those people who are still dreaming about bringing their side hustle to life are clearly concerned about the right issues, it seems they actually underestimate their importance in every category.
Once people actually make the leap, they appreciate even more how much they need great advice in all of these areas.
