Updating DNS server - need to register?

We're moving from shared hosting to vps at Hostgator. Our domains are registered at GoDaddy.  Hostgator support says to do the following in their instructions:

"The following private nameservers will have to be registered at your domain name registrar. Then, each of your domains will need to be updated at your domain registrar(s) with these nameservers..." and then lists two new nameservers:
ns1.ourdomain.com with IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
ns2.ourdomain.com with IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

My question: Do I need to go under "advanced features" and add my own host names as nameservers first or should I just go ahead and change the nameservers on the DNS Management page?  Thanks!

Re: Updating DNS server - need to register?

You'll need to register the nameservers first before setting them as custom nameservers.
