Private Key for SSL Certificate

Hi, i'm trying to get an SSL certificate installed. Having followed the video i have got to the point in the cPanel where I browse, select and install the certificate. It doesn't self generate the Private Key, leaving the box blank. There's a few suggestions as to where to get the key, but none are simple that I can see. Surely there's a reason why the Key didn't just self generate?
