1. Installed wordpress by using the godaddy application method.
2. Tried to login but got the "Error establishing a database connection" error
3. Followed this guide from godaddy (Link) and created a new MySQL database, I then added a user to the database. And then finally updated the wp-config.php file to link to the new database name and use the user login and password I created for the database.
I'm now getting a Can't Select Database error. Could it be that the user I created for the database doesn't have any privileges?

The application installer in any GoDaddy hosting type sets up a database and the connection for you. So getting "error establishing a database connection" is a little odd.
I don't know what type of hosting you have to try to get more specific, but I'd remove the wordpress install from the app manager, clear any leftover files and databases, and try installing again.
