WordPress Dashboard Timing Out

I have been trying to access my Wordpress dashboard but it either times out the says it cannot be accessed, or when I do get through it looks like this below. I have chatted with support but they do not see the issue on their end.

Re: WordPress Dashboard Timing Out

What type of hosting account do you have?

  1. Linux/cPanel
  2. Windows/Plesk
  3. Managed WordPress

Re: WordPress Dashboard Timing Out

It might help to (temporarily) enable wordpress's debug mode.

You can do this by going into the wp-config.php file in the root directory and look for the line that reads

define('WP_DEBUG', false);

If it's not there, put it there just above the line that reads

/* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

Change false to true and upload.  Check the admin page and you'll possibly see a host of errors that didn't show before.  Most of the "warning" variety like for deprecated function calls.

Notes: Make sure you don't overwrite your database connection strings.  I usually 'get' the config.php file from the server, make the changes and then 'put' the file.  Also, when I do this, I open the admin page in the browser and then leave it there while I change the debug line back to false.  This minimizes the number of visitors that see the ugly error messages caused by debug mode.

Another thing to consider is it's probably a plugin causing the issue.  You can go into the /wp-content/plugins folder and change the folder names to disable the plugins.  For example, change the akismet folder to akismet.bak.  Change all the plugins folders names and check the admin section.  If it works well, change the folder names back one at a time checking the admin section after each one.  Eventually, you'll enable a plugin that 'breaks' the admin section.  That's your problem.  See if there's an update for the plugin.  If there's not, you might have to look for a different plugin that gives you the same functionality.

Re: WordPress Dashboard Timing Out

Hi @artistgew,

If you were doing an install from scratch (ftp everything to server), I've seen instances where the stylesheet for the theme/installation was corrupted and caused this exact issue.  In this case, just reinstall the theme.  If you updated your theme, try the update again.

Hope this helps,

James

Re: WordPress Dashboard Timing Out

Hi @romeoquoi,

What platform are you using?  When I check the domain as you listed it, it appears that it is directing to a parked domain.

You might need to make sure your A record and CNAME records are correctly configured.  If you are on a GoDaddy managedwp plan AND the domain is registered at GoDaddy this should happen automatically when you switch from temporary to real domain name.  If you are on a cPanel, you'll need to get the IP address and then modify your A and CName records.

Hope this helps,

James

Re: WordPress Dashboard Timing Out

@romeoquoi ,

Check your nameservers in your DNS zone settings to make sure they are now using the GoDaddy nameservers.

Hope this helps,

James
